Author Biography

As a teenager in my native Colombia, I published poetry and stories of the kind that later came to be called “magical realism.” I then came to United States as an immigrant. In my first ten years here I served in the U.S. Air Force and received several university degrees, culminating with my Ph.D. in philosophy of science from the University of California at Berkeley. I became a university professor, eventually shifting my research and teaching to neuroscience. In the meantime I published seven academic books about science and two novels. The first novel was The Master of Fate, which received the Black Heron Press Award for Social Fiction. The second was Alex in Femiland: A Politically Incorrect Novel of Morals, which deals with the great personal harm caused by trampling on the Constitution. I am now retired, although I still do neuroscience research and continue to write academic and literary works. I have recently finished two books of poems, one in English and one in Spanish. The one in Spanish is titled En el Silencio que Nace del Silencio (“In Silence Born of Silence”). The one in English is Dark Prince: Poetic Tales of Unrequited Love. I hope the teenager I once was would have been pleased.

Alex in Femiland by Gonzalo Munevar is a novel following the stories of two college professors, Raul and Alex. Both coming from very high educational and familial backgrounds, they come to the Sound College to pursue their needs and desires. While at the Sound College, Alex struggles to find peace with his internal conflicts, while trying to survive in a place where his ideas are seen as unpopular.

Both Raul and Alex are really well rounded and interesting characters. The author did a really good job describing their back stories and their personalities. Through interaction with other characters, the author begins to sculpt a character portrait in our minds. While both are characters that have opposite ideas, thoughts, and personality, the friendship/relationship between the two is quite interesting and fun to read about.

The Sound College is a well thought out environment/setting to base the novel in, and the author's efforts really show. It has been clearly established that the institution is very prestigious, and a school that encourages students to think and build their own ideas. It is also a school that is strict on maintaining racial and gender equality on campus. Moreover, it is a school that does things differently from most. This is a very original setting, something that is very new and fresh and inviting.
