An Angel With Four Legs is a heartwarming children’s picture book written by Dr. Sheila Cooperman with illustrations by Lily Ashton. The story follows Chelsea and her family as they grieve the loss of their father. Chelsea's mother is often found sitting by the window, not working, while her little brother, Reece, no longer wants to play. One day, Chelsea opens the front door and discovers a dog she believes is an angel. The dog introduces himself as Nubby-Bean, a member of the Rainbow Brigade, responsible for bringing joy and hope. Chelsea finds his name funny, but soon, Nubby-Bean’s presence helps lift the spirits of Chelsea, Reece, and their mother. As the family begins to play and create beautiful memories together, Chelsea’s mother is inspired to start a new business, finally taking her away from the window seat.
An Angel With Four Legs is the second book in The Rainbow Brigade series by Dr. Sheila Cooperman, exploring themes of healing, hope, and the importance of friendship. Animal lovers will fall in love with Nubby-Bean, who brings warmth and joy. Chelsea is a relatable character, and many readers will connect with her experience of loss and her determination to revive laughter in her family; her journey is both touching and inspiring. The narration is easy to follow and understand, and the colorful illustrations beautifully complement the story. Experiencing grief can be painful and confusing, especially for children who may not fully understand their emotions. This book can help parents facilitate open discussions about death, grief, and life after loss with their children. I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend sharing it with your children to help them navigate their feelings of loss and find comfort in companionship.
