Andy the Admiral and the USS Shipshape by Mark C. Fava follows the commander of the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Shipshape and his crew. Admiral Andy and his crew are ready to embark on yet another voyage this morning. Andy is dressed neatly and is punctual as usual, like the rest of his crew, except for Sammy the Seaman, who is late once again. Andy's crew always keeps the ship clean and tidy, and the admiral insists on everyone helping each other with their tasks. On a ship like this, it's also important to be honest with each other. Through his own actions, Andy demonstrates how honesty and hard work are essential to accomplishing one's goals. In the end, teamwork always pays off.
Andy the Admiral and the USS Shipshape is a fun-filled adventure for kids. Apart from being entertaining, this picture book also has a few valuable life lessons for children. Author Mark C. Fava draws on his own extensive Navy background to weave a delightful rhyming yarn that young readers are bound to love. The narrative is crisp and to the point. The main protagonist, Admiral Andy, leads by example, which inspires his crew to do the same. He is someone children and even older readers can look up to. The illustrations are another great aspect of this book. Agus Prajogo and Yohanes Bastian capture the tone and themes of Fava's narrative perfectly with their vivid, lively illustrations that breathe life into the story. All in all, this is a wonderful children's picture book.
