Jim Frazee's novel Anemone takes place in the 1960s in the California seaside town of Aqua Verda. Russell had fought to save his brother Wyatt and woke up in the hospital with severe burns from the house fire. Russell’s parents thought he was Wyatt, and he could not tell them the truth as he could not speak and was covered in bandages. The fire looked like arson, and Russell's parents believed he was the one who started the fire. Russell believed Wyatt was murdered and had to find the truth and clear his name. Russell fled to a seaside town where he met Horse, a surfer who later became his friend and mentor. Edie, Russell's crush, was also hiding secrets of her own, and with her as an ally, they found that Wyatt might not have been the intended target.
Anemone by Jim Frazee is filled with themes of emotional survival, terrible reckonings, redemption, and betrayal. This page-turner had me hooked from the start, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what to expect next and had a hard time putting the book down. The characters each had a background that described where they came from and who they were. Russell and Wyatt were brothers despite their differences. I found Edie interesting. When she was missing, nobody was searching for her; only Russell was worried about her. The plot, which examined the anguish of a broken family, was expertly written and executed. I will remember the story for a very long time because it is so intriguing.
