Discipline by Subtraction: The Art of Strategic Laziness by James R. Snoddy presents a discipline-based approach that allows individuals to reclaim their time, perspective, and relationships by eliminating elements that do not add value to their lives. Strategic Laziness is not about removing tasks simply because they are undesirable; rather, it involves the skill to recognize what to eliminate, when to do so, and having the discernment to know that it was the right choice. By exercising this discipline, you can restructure your life to maximize the value of your time. As the author emphasizes, this process is not only about saving time but is also a powerful multiplier for your efforts.
What I particularly loved about Discipline by Subtraction by James R. Snoddy is how the principles can apply to a wide range of situations, from leading a platoon to something as simple as making your bed. As the author outlines his strategies, he illustrates how much money you may be losing due to habitual routines. This insight encouraged me to reassess my habits and identify what I can change, eliminate, or intentionally combine with other tasks. I am now on the lookout for shortcuts that can become part of my new system. What excites me is that this process goes beyond just cutting things out; it involves running a diagnostic on my mind, reclaiming time in my schedule, and alleviating mental chaos. The most valuable information for me was the tactical negotiations. This adds a new tool when dealing with people. I highly recommend this book to those who think they are too busy or need to simplify their lives.
