Another Life: And Other Mindbending Sci-Fi Stories by Mike Marsbergen is a collection of thought-provoking futuristic stories. Take a glimpse into the lonely life of Tilly, a bounty hunter who follows a mysterious crow into the unknown, and that of Natalie, a woman seeking love in letters and a virtual world. Go on the run with a rogue space agent, join a man looking to clear his name after being accused of killing his wife, and Frank, a father wishing to save his daughter in a world where violence and perversion reign. A couple who discover proof of alien intelligence is surprised when one of them displays supernatural abilities, but at the cost of losing her memories of their love. Join a young man on his journey to manhood, but what he learns changes his community forever; and Philip, a religiously devoted man who has traveled across a desert in search of the Savior in a post-apocalyptic world. Finally, read the story of Kel, whose love for his childhood friend Charli and work pressure start to make him paranoid, and Arnold, who awakens from 43 years in cryostasis to a changed world.

Another Life is a great collection that combines dystopian fiction, horror, and psychological drama. It addresses various fears, such as loneliness, the loss of families, love, identity, and moral decline. I love how Mike Marsbergen brings each story and character to life. The narrative is dynamic and unpredictable. Every story drops you into a world that’s both fascinating and a little unsettling, full of high-tech gadgets, complex beliefs, and social rules. What has stayed with me, though, are not just the worlds but the people. The stories explore issues like corruption, drug abuse, work pressure, delusions, and the use of violence as spectacle. The stories mainly deal with dark themes, but at the same time, they show the hope that we can find in humanity, resilience, love, and redemption. Although some can be read as standalone pieces, others are connected and set in the same universe. Overall, this is an interesting collection that I recommend. Readers interested in stories that deal with uncomfortable themes and human psychology, identity, and connections in a future shaped by technology, isolation, and societal threats will enjoy this book.
