Aphrodite Finds Her Inner Beauty is the fifth book in the Taki & Toula Time Travelers book series, written by Elena Paige and illustrated by Josef Hill. On finding a pair of time travelling shoes (tsarouhia) once owned by their grandfather, Taki and Toula have the urge to go on another time travelling adventure with the Greek gods. After putting on one shoe each, Taki and Toula find themselves face to face with the beautiful Aphrodite in ancient Greece. When the Greek Goddess of Love physically changes back to her original features, she breaks down and cries as she believes that physical beauty is everything, but quickly learns that a person’s true beauty is that which is found within.

One of the most wonderful things I have learned in reading the many books of Elena Paige is that each has a positive moral to the story. Children around the world are encouraged to see themselves and the world around them as beautiful, both inside and out, while also learning about each of the Greek gods in turn. I especially loved the item of trivia at the end of the story about the ancient sculptor Pygmalion, whose sculpture of a beautiful woman, Galatea, had been brought to life by Aphrodite so that he would no longer be alone. It is so rare to come across educational books which do not just fuel a child’s hunger for knowledge, but are also bright, colorful and entertaining at the same time. Few writers can capture audiences from all ages, but Elena Paige always seems to be able to do so, and my knowledge base has also expanded at the same time – something for which I am grateful. I wholeheartedly recommend Aphrodite Finds Her Inner Beauty to readers aged from 8 years through to 108, as the moral of the tale is, indeed, an important one.
