Arid is a work of fiction in the science fiction and futuristic sub-genres and was penned by author Anne Joyce. The work contains some adult language which may make it more suitable for mature teens and adult readers. In a tale of dystopia and empowering revolution, our central protagonist Joshua Wyman begins the tale as a middle-class citizen in a post-apocalyptic society. In the world of Arid, nuclear warfare has decimated the earth and natural resources are in high demand, particularly water. When Joshua is reduced to being an outcast by the hike in water prices, he has to rely on his fellow outcast neighbors for survival and solidarity. The results are the brewing of uncivil behavior and the flickering flames of revolution in a world gone dry.
One of the things which most impressed me whilst reading Arid was the commitment of the author to realistic human behavior in times of crisis, and the divisive power that greed can have over all of us. Author Anne Joyce takes worldbuilding seriously, creating cinematic descriptions of her dystopian, post-nuclear world and inviting us to be totally immersed within it. In terms of character development, Joshua is an everyman figure whom we see fall from grace and we can, therefore, root for him as he carves out a new life for himself in a changing world. Overall, I would highly recommend Arid to fans of post-apocalyptic fiction who are seeking a strong sense of community amongst their characters, and a logical and realistic dystopian tale to sink their teeth into.
