I know a story is a winner when it makes me smile and I smiled the entire time I read Around the World Adventures of Max and Jack: France by author and illustrator Emily F. Overton. I loved the over sized illustrations of the characters, settings, and even the airplane. What a fun way to learn more about another culture! The vocabulary and language are informal yet more than appropriate for a young reader.
Overton’s synopsis of this particular installment to her adventure series reads: A boy named Max and his dog Jack live on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Each day they travel to a different country in the world. In each country they meet other boys and girls and their pets, who tell them about their country and take them sightseeing. At the end of each day, they fly back home and look at their photo album.
The fact that Jack and his trusty dog anticipate a new daily adventure offers hope that life can be one big adventure. I appreciate the hope this offers readers while gaining an insight into a foreign culture. This is more than a geography series. For teachers, I see a multitude of lesson plan opportunities across the curriculum. From supplemental lessons in social studies class to pen pal opportunities in writing class, I encourage the author to share her work with classroom educators. Thank you, Emily F. Overton, for sharing this. I believe it will delight many young readers.
