Arthur and the Big Wild World by Charles A. Thomas is an appealing picture book that introduces young readers to different natural regions of the world. From deserts and mountains to the taiga, Arctic tundra, rainforests, oceans, and lakes, it takes us along as Arthur explores the marvelous landscapes and the animals that live there. He gets to meet bears, foxes, dolphins, elephants, camels, penguins, monkeys, toucans, tigers, zebras, and many more beautiful and amazing creatures. In the marshes and wetlands, he sees an egret, otters, and frogs, and the cave that is home to shy bats. There’s wildlife in the big cities, too, and Arthur even makes a trip to space to see the whole Earth. In the end, he comes back home and enjoys sitting with his parents in the backyard under the stars, talking about all they’ve seen.
Kids will absolutely love Arthur and the Big Wild World for opening up so many different worlds. The rhyming text is great for read-aloud sessions. The dreamy illustrations, also by Charles A. Thomas, capture the beauty of the world in accurate detail. It’s a great way to awaken kids’ sense of adventure. The pictures also convey some useful tips, such as taking along your binoculars and dressing appropriately for the climate and location. With its sweeping scope and up-close view of a very big and wonderful world, it’s destined to become a classic. Highly recommended for kids and parents who like to read aloud and who love nature and exploration; also for libraries, kindergartens, and daycares.
