Aurelia by Dominique Wright follows Aurelia Livia Serenis, the High Vestal of Rome, and General Cassian as they secretly develop a forbidden romantic relationship despite her sacred vows and Rome’s strict laws. Their mutual attraction leads to clandestine meetings and emotional devotion, risking severe consequences. Aurelia experiences ominous visions, including an attempted poisoning, signaling danger. Marcus, Cassian’s jealous friend, schemes to undermine him politically, threatening both their reputations and safety. Aurelia becomes pregnant with Cassian’s child, deepening their peril. As political issues rise and suspicions grow within the temple and Rome’s elite, Aurelia must conceal her pregnancy while Cassian faces increasing attacks on his honor. The story culminates in a fragile, difficult balance between their hidden love, looming betrayal, and the harsh realities of Roman law and politics.
Dominique Wright’s Aurelia offers a wonderfully thoughtful tale set against the grandeur of ancient Rome, where the prose walks a perfect line between poetic description and clear storytelling. The writing consistently pulls readers into its detailed portrayals of characters and settings, from bustling festivals to serene hidden groves, in an atmosphere that is fully immersive and textured. The emotional and sensory moments between Aurelia and Cassian are rendered with care, and we get a truly intimate view of their secret bond and shared devotion. The political intrigue and risk are ever-present and surround their love, which unfolds naturally, creating a steady momentum that holds readers' interest throughout. Wright’s command of authentic history and what is clearly born of exhaustive research are excellent. Overall, this novel is a well-executed romance with loyalty, devotion, and courage under scrutiny against a vividly imagined historical backdrop. Very highly recommended.
