Awakening by Terrell Chafin is a darkly comedic horror novel that follows Rage Sutherland, a foul-mouthed, aimless 30-year-old, whose life takes a terrifying turn when a strange mushroom appears in his yard. Unbeknownst to him, the mushroom is part of a massive underground fungus called Mother, desperate for sustenance and love. After consuming the mushroom, Rage experiences overwhelming ecstasy but soon finds himself hunted by Emile Navarro, a resurrected murderer. Forced to choose between bliss and survival, Rage is caught in a twisted battle for his life as Mother’s deadly offspring seeks its next victim.

Author Terrell Chafin’s blend of dark humor and horror is the first striking thing I noticed from the moment I picked this book up, offering readers moments of grotesque terror and then sudden, unexpected laughter that complement the novel's bizarre premise perfectly. This is surreal, dark humor at its best, and the character development, particularly of Rage and Emile, is unique and complex, allowing Chafin to explore themes of existentialism and what truly makes us happy in a surprisingly poignant way under the surface of this weird and nightmarish world. I also really enjoyed the vivid, unsettling imagery of the horrors Rage explores as he tries to save himself. The narration of the world and his physical experiences add a visceral quality to the novel that will leave readers both horrified and fascinated by every grotesque detail. The pacing of the plot is wonderfully unpredictable and sharp, with a fast-paced narrative, and plenty of shocking twists. These keep readers on edge while also probing deeper questions about life, desire, and what people are willing to sacrifice for fleeting pleasure. Overall, Awakening is a brilliant novel that fans of accomplished, surreal, dark paranormal comedies will enjoy from cover to cover.

Awakening by Terrell Chafin is a fascinating blend of fantasy and horror. The story unfolds in a quaint hillside community in Los Angeles, USA. Rage, a thirty-year-old, happy-go-lucky guy living off a meager inheritance, and his tenant Tim, a conscientious college student, discover strange mushrooms with red and blue flecks in the garden. Worried about Rage tasting one of these mushrooms, Tim searches the Internet to check if these mushrooms are poisonous, but cannot identify them. He discovers that mushrooms with red and blue spots can be hallucinogenic. Suddenly, Rage notices thousands of these mushrooms on the hillside. Fascinated, Tim and Rage are yet to learn that a series of paranormal events will soon shatter their small community, changing their lives forever.

Initially, Terrell Chafin’s Awakening felt like an intriguing puzzle, making me wonder how standalone episodes fit into the picture. As I read on, the storyline started to emerge, the suspense built up, and I was increasingly absorbed. The horror scenes felt overwhelming at times, but Rage’s dog Fatty won my heart. I loved how Terrell painted Fatty’s character, thoughts, and adventures, and my enjoyment of this jaw-dropping story ultimately depended on Fatty's survival. I also appreciated the pervasive exposure of social issues, such as substance addiction and pedophilic child abuse. This book will appeal to adult fantasy and horror fans. Graphic violence against humans, pets, and wildlife, pedophilic musings, deaths, rape, kidnapping, murder, and profane language make this novel unsuitable for younger and sensitive readers.

Awakening is a zombie horror novel by Terrell Chafin. Plagued by loneliness, an ancient fungus called Mother wakes up with consciousness, ready to devour everything to perpetuate her life. Rage Sutherland is an unemployed thirty-year-old man who likes to float through life. After he consumes some hallucinogenic mushrooms near his home, he finds himself euphoric and happy, paying no heed to the fact that the mushrooms are eating him slowly. Meanwhile, Emile Navarro, a sex pest and a murderer, comes alive in his grave, as Mother uses his body for food. When Navarro sees a young girl in the neighborhood as his next victim, it's up to Rage, his roommate Tim, and a former victim of Navarro to find a way to stop him and save the young girl's life. But can they destroy Mother?

Part zombie horror and part dark comedy thriller, Awakening is suspenseful, hilarious, scary, and action-packed in equal measure. This book will be an absolute blast for zombie fiction lovers. Using a cast of quirky characters and an unpredictable plot, Terrell Chafin offers readers an entertaining rollercoaster of a novel, where each chapter brings new twists and turns to keep readers glued to the pages. The story hooks you in from the first page and never lets your attention waver until the last. Despite the horror elements, Chafin's novel is also surprisingly funny. The inclusion of gallows humor brings a colorful flavor to the story that makes it all the more enjoyable. The narrative tone reminded me of slasher comedy-horror movies like Shaun of the Dead. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.
