Baby Bird has gone south with her Grandma for the winter. It's spring now, and she's anxious to get home to see her parents. Like any young person, she wants to be where she wants to be right away and her impatience, against her Grandma's advice, has her flying into a roadside billboard and hurting herself, so much so that she can't fly. While she's on the ground, Grandma flies off for some food and a red bird, who calls herself Ruby Red Bird, flies down to see if she can help. Ruby Red Bird and Baby Bird become instant friends and Baby Bird learns that her new friend's parents are dead and she's all alone. Baby Bird reaches out in friendship and offers to help Ruby Red Bird find a home.

Author Barbara Lamping has written and illustrated a delightful book in Baby Bird's Homeward Blessing. In it, she shares messages for young readers, lessons, really, stemming from Biblical passages, particularly the special quote from the Book of Luke: "Do for others as you would have them do for you." Life is a miracle and all around us, all that we can see, is a miracle and we need constant reminders to respect all that is around us, to appreciate all of God's gifts to our planet, gifts of life. And we need to remember to love one another. This is a good learning tool for young readers, teaching respect and caring for others. Very appealing and colorfully illustrated.
