Benny was a good boy, always listening to his mom and setting a good example for his brother and sister. Benny had many friends at school and at church who looked up to him because they thought he was faultless. But Benny knew the way he felt about Jimmy wasn’t right; Jimmy could practice with the basketball hoop in his yard, and Benny idolized him, even though Jimmy made fun of and embarrassed him. Benny still wanted to change and be like Jimmy, even though it went against what his parents had taught him. Do you think it was wise for Benny to start making bad choices because of Jimmy?
Benny and the Basketball Bully is about an issue that everyone faces many times in life: making the right choices. In this story Benny’s parents taught him the right choices to make, and the right people to hang out with, but when Benny saw something that looked better, he started making choices that were not right for him. I liked the twist in the story at the end, because it is heartwarming for a child to take a stand for what he believes.
The outside appearance of the book is very nice, and the illustrations are cool for basketball boys. Although the book's layout is simple, it is still appealing and easy to read and understand. I found it interesting that the author had the sentences rhyming throughout the entire book.
