Author Biography

In 1994 I was asked to participate in the Connections Leadership Project for the State of California. I authored an article about my son's death, which was read at the closing of the final meeting.
As I started out, I heard someone calling my name. He approached me and stood there for a second, "I couldn't let you leave without saying," he paused, composing himself. Then continued," I, too, have had a devastating loss recently. However, your words have given me a new perspective. You changed my life." He reached for my hand, shook it, turned, and left, disappearing into the crowd.
That was the moment I understood why people write and why I write.

Betrayal by Gary E. Smith is the seventh book in the Warren Steelgrave series. Head Brigadier Mattia’s son Carlo joined an FBI task force to investigate a trafficking ring. The task force had discovered an entertainment company that brought girls to Rome on contracts, but once in Rome, their passports were confiscated. Carlo was working undercover as a songwriter at this company. Someone on the task force has downloaded the suspect company’s business files and a second set of incriminating books. Carlo was last seen in the San Francisco Bay area before he went missing, and Head Brigadier Mattia asked Warren Steelgrave to locate his son. Warren’s life would be in danger if the wrong people found out that he was also looking for Carlo.

Betrayal has an intriguing and exciting plot. Gary E. Smith created a world of sex trafficking, murder, and betrayal. I was drawn into this world, and it was easy to visualize the events. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a page-turner, and I could not wait to find out what was going to happen next. The story was fast-paced and full of action. There was never a dull moment with all the twists and turns. The characters were excellently developed and robust. My favorite role players were Warren and Cindy. They enjoyed a comfortable relationship and complemented each other. The story is well-written and easy to read. The major twist at the end surprised me as I did not see it coming.

Betrayal by Gary E. Smith is a captivating novel that delves deep into the intricate web of human relationships, highlighting the profound impact of treachery. We are invited into the world of Warren Steelgrave, who’s finishing his next book of short stories for his publisher when he receives a call from Brigadier Mattia concerning an urgent matter. His son Carlo, who was working undercover as a songwriter in the United States, had been kidnapped. The only one who could crack the codes and dive down into the seedy underworld to get answers that the FBI can’t is Warren. We are then thrust into a murderous plot stretching from Italy to America, and wondering at every turn whether Warren will successfully bust this international scheme or die trying.

Gary E. Smith has an evocative and descriptive writing style, painting vivid pictures of the story’s settings and immersing readers in the character’s experiences. At times the intricate plot seems overwhelming. This requires readers to pay close attention to fully grasp the complex connections between the role players and events. Some readers may find certain of the plot twists predictable, slightly diminishing the element of surprise. However, Betrayal is a fascinating and thought-provoking novel that explores the depths of human nature. With its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, and Smith’s skillful storytelling, this book is a must-read for fans of psychological suspense thrillers and complicated narratives.
