Beware the Violet by Maria Vermisoglou is the first book in The Eulogimenoi Series. Violet is used to small-town traditions that she can’t wait to put behind her. She didn’t consider herself the type to believe in such nonsense as Halloween and magic yet when a white rabbit whisks her away to another realm, she has no choice but to believe. Little did she know that she would find her place within this world of shapeshifters, werewolves, fairies, and every creature imaginable and that she would be swept off her feet by a handsome shapeshifter with a French accent. Violet goes from a girl who didn’t believe in magic to a hero prophesied to save two worlds from a dangerous darkness.
Maria Vermisoglou delivers a fun and energetic read about an ordinary girl drawn into this extraordinary world where Halloween is brought to life. The characters she encounters are a variety of delightful sorts and quirky personalities with a few that become her allies. The alluring and French-accented Jacques has a feisty personality and an instant connection to Violet that captivates her. Jacques and Violet have some friction between them as they navigate their connection, which is him acting as a guide and teacher that helps her with learning control of her powers. The two have a genuine dynamic with sweet and flirty moments while also providing a fun source of drama.
At the root of her journey is a prophecy that pushes her to face who she is and a magical world that she didn’t believe in. This prophecy and her allies help her in the search for identity as everything she’s wanted in life has shifted and the literal weight of the world is on her shoulders. Self-discovery is at the heart of her coming of age tale and her hero’s journey as she has to ward off temptation into darkness and navigate her new relationships to find a new footing for herself. Beware the Violet is perfect for readers that enjoy urban fantasy and supernatural tales with vampires, shapeshifters, and fairies, along with romance, danger, and discovery.
