Big Kid Night by Kira Wallette is a heartfelt children's book about a mother lovingly getting her toddler ready for bed. The little girl's room is calm as her Mama rocks and sings her to sleep, filling their space with comfort. The toddler is sweetly tucked under a blanket, with her penguin toy nearby, feeling safe in her Mama’s nurturing presence. Each page shows the little girl's progress as a 'big kid', while still under the watchful eyes of her caring Mama. The night passes by peacefully in their cozy home. Even when the lights are off, Mama's love is still close by, like a calming embrace that never fades. In the morning, the little girl wakes up feeling energized. This shows that the temporary separation between mother and child is simply a normal and healthy part of growing up.
Big Kid Night by Kira Wallette is an endearing bedtime tale that reminds parents of the importance of love, patience, and creating a warm environment for their growing child. I like how the author repeats specific nighttime routines, such as hugging and having gentle talks. These additional tidbits show that consistent acts of care help a child feel secure, regardless of their age. The author uses soothing rhymes and beautiful pictures to show the tenderness between mother and child. This book is an excellent reminder that even when a child gets older, this doesn't sever the bond between them and their parent(s). In fact, this creates a new opportunity to discover other healthy ways to nurture that loving parent-child relationship while still acknowledging that your little one is getting older. If you have a young child learning to adjust to a new bedtime routine, this is the perfect book to read during story time.
