Blood Reef is a work of fiction in the thriller, sports, and crime subgenres, and was penned by author Jeff Walker. Thomas Udall Sutton has finally landed a lifetime position as head coach at Port Verona in Texas. Already at the age of retirement, his past is littered with failed marriages and assistant coach positions throughout the state. The Barracudas of Port Verona have not won a season in over 30 years, and Coach Thump Sutton is tasked to change the tides. With his furry companion Jenny, whom he treats as a daughter, Thump goes out to make this football team one to remember. However, it seems that the administration does not want him to succeed. And, when Coach Sutton is named as a witness in the disappearance of a police officer, the pressure starts building. Will Thump Sutton be able to bring the trophy home, or will someone else’s plans cost him his life?
The author has created each character with familiar personalities that make them not only relatable but also likable. The story flows in a way that makes it easy to follow, and I loved how the murders seemed to have absolutely no connection with the lead character, only to have the entire plot fall into place at the end. This certainly kept me guessing throughout the whole book. I particularly enjoyed Rose: to have your conscience be a constant companion is undoubtedly something more of us should be doing. Blood Reef by Jeff Walker is a must for anyone that loves football mixed with murder.
