There is a blue bird in the forest that loves to sing a cheery song. All the wildlife around enjoys her singing. In Teresa Whitaker Smith’s book, Blue, this blue bird has everything she needs nearby: food, clean water, and a safe tree in which to nest. One day, that all changes. She notices something different about her berry bushes. She can’t eat them. That makes her very sad, and her once-happy songs become somber. Her habitat has changed, and she doesn’t like it. The sad songs reach deep into the forest, and a red bird takes on the mission of visiting the blue bird and inviting her to join him deeper in the forest where he lives. He explains that humans have destroyed her natural habitat, but they haven’t reached his part of the forest yet. Will Blue follow Red, leaving behind her home and friends forever?

Teresa Whitaker Smith’s picture book story, Blue, is a powerful lesson for young readers about caring for the environment that we all share with wildlife (especially birds). The story is simple and easy for young readers to follow. The illustrations by the author are bright, bold, and colorful, and help move the story along. At the end of the book, the author gives a brief discussion of her love of birds and how important it is to care for the natural world. Life is a journey, after all, one that we share with many other living creatures. This is an entertaining and educational read, a great addition to a young person’s library.
