In Matt Lester’s Blue Blood, a lifelong University of Michigan football supporter takes readers into his family’s connection to the Wolverines, and his eventual place in the program that won the 2023 national championship. Raised among the traditions of Michigan football, Lester learned the game through his father, Mel, a devoted supporter who became close to legendary coach Bo Schembechler. As the university moves through changing coaches and disappointing seasons, Lester remains invested in the team’s future. His relationship with head coach Jim Harbaugh brings him into the daily life of the program, where his work with players extends beyond the stadium. Drawing on firsthand experiences, conversations with coaches, and decades of Michigan history, Lester follows the rebuilding of a celebrated football institution toward an undefeated season that means so much to its supporters.
Matt Lester’s Blue Blood is an exceptional sports memoir, and the author’s enthusiasm for Michigan football is so infectious that I soon felt invested in the people whose lives have revolved around the program. I particularly loved Lester’s account of a fundraising auction where he enters a spirited bidding contest with fellow supporter Stephen Eisenberg for a trip with the team, and you can almost hear the room coming to life. Lester is especially good at showing how much his relationships with the players mean to him, which comes through beautifully when members of the championship squad call him “Uncle Matt” as he tries to enter their restricted team lunch in Houston. His appreciation for the people behind Michigan’s success gives the book such an inviting quality. Well written and thoroughly enjoyable, football fans will absolutely love this.
