Bridges by Linda Griffin is a poignant story set in 1963 that explores an unexpected connection between Neil Vincent, a WWII veteran working as a chauffeur, and Mary Claire DeWinter, a young blind woman who has recently inherited her grandfather's estate. Despite their differences in age, class, and faith, the two develop a friendship built on mutual respect and their shared love of literature. As Mary Claire seeks independence and challenges the societal expectations that constrain her future, the story delves into the complexities of friendship, love, and the courage required to forge one's path. The narrative thoughtfully examines how unexpected connections can bridge seemingly insurmountable divides while painting a vivid picture of life in 1960s America.

Bridges by Linda Griffin is packed with historical authenticity and genuine emotional depth, and I enjoyed every moment. The characters feel genuine and multifaceted, each shaped by their distinct life experiences and perspectives. I was particularly moved by Griffin's sensitive portrayal of disability and inner strength, which avoids common stereotypes and offers a refreshing and nuanced view personal to Mary's experiences. The gentle, intelligent exploration of themes like independence and societal pressure addresses universal human experiences for both women and people with disabilities then and now. The attention to period detail brings 1960s America to life with careful precision that honors the past but is sensitive to the modern reader.

The audiobook benefits greatly from Eric Priessman's masterful narration as his engaging voice work brings depth and distinction to each character, enabling listeners to fully immerse themselves in the emotional landscape. The measured pacing perfectly captures the contemplative nature of the narrative, while his subtle variations in tone and inflection show the nuances of the developing relationship between Neil and Mary Claire. Priessman's performance, combined with the professional production quality, creates an audiobook that draws listeners deep into Griffin's world. Overall, Bridges by Linda Griffin is a compelling and thoughtfully crafted novel that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a story that explores the power of human connection and the courage to challenge social conventions.
