Adolescence is a great stage in life because it brings new freedom and opportunity. It can also be challenging and overwhelming because it carries additional responsibilities. This guide also addresses school matters such as maintaining motivation and coping with anxiety.

Jennifer Costanza writes in a conversational tone. One section that caught my attention discusses personal challenges, which she describes as a game where the obstacles are in control at each level and must be overcome. This different perspective provides space for a new approach. The book also takes a look at some more serious topics like bullying and stress. I liked the activities that are recommended, many of which involve writing. These invite you to reflect on various aspects of your personality and interaction with others. My favorite part deals with discipline because it is explained in an informal way and with tips that are easy to follow. Building Self-Worth deals with many everyday aspects of life that will enable young people to navigate adolescence in a healthy and manageable way.

When it comes to self-esteem, we all have difficulties from time to time. There are occasions when each of us feels that we just don’t measure up to what we want to be or what we think we should be. Building Self-Worth: A Teen Guide to a Strong Sense of Self, Purpose, and Meaning by Jennifer Costanza MA, LMFT, is all about what you should do when that happens and perhaps even before. It’s about teaching you the foundations of self-worth and self-esteem and then turning that into actionable skills. You will learn about communication problems and manipulation and the like and then about the positives you need to employ, like empathy and conflict resolution, and when and how you’ll need to use those new tools.

We all know that we’re supposed to have a good sense of self-worth and self-esteem, but achieving it is a different story. Building Self-Worth by Jennifer Costanza helps you figure out what to do and it helps you accomplish it in ways that make sense. This includes overcoming the actual obstacles that are in your path and using your new self-esteem to achieve the things that are important to you. It’s not about learning these things in an abstract sense. It’s rather about applying them in your daily life, which is the essence of any self-help book. The exercise sections help you apply the principles that you’ve been reading about. My favorite is the exercise in chapter 3. It’s hard to achieve that level of introspection, but it’s important to allow you to move forward with your life in a positive way.
