Christine Husom's Buried in the House is a gripping novel that transports readers to the depths of human complexity and mystery. Sergeant Corinne 'Corky' Aleckson responds to a welfare check at what looks like an abandoned property at the beginning of the story. She discovers the horrific remains of a hoarder's existence there. As Corky digs more into the mystery, she uncovers a terrifying crime that has been boiling beneath the surface for decades and a complicated web of familial links and long-held secrets. The story captivates readers with a complicated mystery set against the backdrop of small-town intrigue by deftly fusing psychological research with police procedural components.

Christine Husom's writing is atmospheric in its detail and character-driven storytelling. The plot is intricately designed, balancing suspenseful twists with moments of emotional resonance. Corky is a compelling protagonist; her strength and vulnerability add depth to the narrative. The pace is perfectly calibrated, maintaining tension without rushing the unfolding drama. Husom handles themes of mental health, family loyalty, and societal judgment with sensitivity and nuance, making the story as thought-provoking as it is thrilling. The vivid setting, the richly drawn secondary characters, and many other elements go into making this an immersive, engaging novel. I was engrossed from the first page to the last, wanting to discover the secrets of the close-knit community that Husom has established. Buried in the House is a wonderful and fulfilling read for anyone who appreciates crime fiction that goes beyond just another mystery.
