In her autobiography, Burned: Pyromania, Murder, and a Daughter's Nightmare, Lori Orr Kovach opens up to author Frank C. Girardot Jr. about being the daughter of the Pillowcase Pyro, John Orr. For years, her father had evaded the police, committing horrendous crimes of arson. From a young age, Orr wanted to be a police officer or fireman. However, after failing the required exam, he was instead diagnosed as being mentally ill. Later, however, he did get accepted into Glendale’s Fire Department which would prove to be the worst thing that could happen to the residents of California. Claiming innocence to this day, Orr refuses to accept his sentence of life in prison. All Lori wants is closure, a full confession from the man she had always thought of as a hero, who is instead now serving four life sentences for two of the most evil crimes. To this day, Lori doubts that her father is the Pillowcase Pyro. This is her story.
This book is impressive; I was hooked from the start. Reading like a thriller, Frank C. Girardot Jr. captivates the reader with his dry wit, serving as a light reprieve from a tragic story. What is mindblowing is how Orr was able to worm his way into becoming the fire department’s top arson investigator and captain despite his inadequacy and obvious inability to work with others. Also, the sheer idiocy behind Points of Origin is testimony to this man’s narcissistic personality. What I find admirable is Lori's love and devotion to her dad; it speaks volumes about her character, especially when one takes into account the years of abuse she suffered as a child. I also admire Lori's bravery in writing Burned with Frank; her honesty and unbiased opinions regarding her father are truly honorable. If you love true crime stories, you will enjoy Burned: Pyromania, Murder, and a Daughter's Nightmare.
