Joshua has autism. He’s nervous about a lot of things, and school can be a strange, scary place. But, in Hyeyoung and Sophia Lee’s My School Has Superheroes, Joshua learns that it’s okay to be nervous, scared, and to worry about the simple things in life. In his class, each student is more than just a caring friend; they’re all superheroes. There’s Jake, who patiently encourages Joshua to return his happy morning greeting. And there’s Oliver, who helps Joshua with a simple writing assignment. There are even some girls who happily share happy vibes to make Joshua feel more comfortable, like Lily, who sits with Joshua at lunch and convinces him that a popcorn sandwich might be really good to eat.

Hyeyoung and Sophia Lee’s picture book, My School Has Superheroes: Because Kindness is the Greatest Superpower, is a positive tale about giving with the heart, caring for someone who is different, and making everyone feel welcome. All it takes is a little patience and some kindness. The language is simple, allowing young readers to easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The keyword that stands out is ‘superhero,’ which is emphasized in red and capital letters. The plot follows a series of superhero examples with all kinds of colorful illustrations by Deni Nuhoho that demonstrate Joshua’s different mood swings. This is a great teaching tool to help young readers show empathy and compassion for others, especially those with different learning and emotional disabilities. This book in itself is a superhero.
