Calvin’s Great Slide is a work of fiction in the fantasy and emotional drama subgenres. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Colin Moore. The book follows Calvin after his father's death prompts his mother to move them in with his grandparents. Overwhelmed not just by grief but by the change of environment from the noisy city to the quiet countryside, Calvin’s life changes when he inherits a magic magnifying glass and a parchment, which help him explore exciting new places and discover adventure, though like all adventures it is not without danger.

Grief is a powerful motivator for fictional characters to leave their comfort zones and begin their hero’s journey, but when used tactlessly, it can make the stories that feature it feel cheap. Fortunately for this book, author Colin Moore is able to articulate a part of grief that young people feel where the world doesn’t fully make sense, and a new normal has to be sought out and even earned. There’s an understanding of the complexity of emotion on display in these pages that’s rare to see in similar works. The adventure Calvin undertakes as a result of this is a stunning piece of escapism that adds a fresh angle to the coming of age story. Overall, Calvin’s Great Slide is an exciting and engaging adventure that I enjoyed reading from start to finish, with an imaginative world and a compelling journey through it undertaken by a well-realized and dynamic protagonist. I recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Calvin's Great Slide is a children's fantasy adventure novella by Colin Moore. When his mother moves them to his grandparents' house in the countryside after her husband's death, Calvin has a hard time acclimatizing to his new home. However, after he finds a mysterious magnifying glass and a seemingly innocuous ancient scroll, Calvin's life is set to change. On his deathbed, his grandfather tells him that the artifacts contain magic that Calvin would discover in his time of need. Brimming with curiosity, Calvin follows the map in the scroll, only to find himself in the realm of Colluncos. Soon, an elderly man named Dashkay tells Calvin that he must navigate the Swallows if he is to return home. Can Calvin find the courage and the spirit to do so? Will he be able to identify friends from foes?

A fantasy adventure tale that teaches about the power of spirit over the mind and body, Calvin's Great Slide is a suitable book for children and young adults alike. Author Colin Moore tells an engaging story about a young boy plagued by grief over his father's death who finds himself in a dangerous place and must traverse overwhelming odds to find his way back home. Crisp and concise, Moore's narrative flows past quickly with an immersive plot full of unexpected twists and turns. The characters are likable and easy to root for. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between Calvin, Catalina, and Gaenic. If talking bears, pixies, and demons sound intriguing to you, check out Calvin's Great Slide.

Calvin’s Great Slide by Colin Moore is an adventurous story for young children, with a few lessons to be learned along the way. After the death of his father, Calvin and his mother move to the country to live with his grandparents. Adjusting to country living is very hard on Calvin and is just made harder when his grandfather falls seriously ill. Before his grandfather dies, he gives Calvin a magical magnifying glass and an old scroll. His grandfather tells him that when the time is right, the scroll, magnifying glass, and compass will take him on great adventures. When Calvin’s grandfather passes away, Calvin is sent on an epic adventure where he learns about friendship, helping others, and accepting the loss of loved ones. But after entering this magical world, will he ever be able to go home to his mother or will he be trapped forever?

I enjoyed Calvin’s Great Slide by Colin Moore immensely. The story had adventure, a bit of comedy, and also a few tragic moments. Within a few short pages, Colin Moore brought life to characters and I wanted to read more about them. I can’t wait until my niece and nephew are old enough so I can read them this exciting adventure story. This is a must-read for any young reader who enjoys easy-to-read adventure stories and recently experienced loss in their lives. In Calvin’s Great Slide I felt as if I was part of the adventure and I couldn’t put down the book.

Calvin’s Great Slide by Colin Moore follows the story of young Calvin who, together with his mother, moves to the country to live with his grandparents. Upon being left alone, Calvin decides to explore the house out of boredom and soon comes across a chest. In the chest, he finds an ornate magnifying glass with a compass on the handle and a piece of parchment. It is only after Calvin’s grandfather becomes ill that his grandpa tells him the magnifying glass and parchment are magic. However, he warns Calvin never to misuse them. One night Calvin goes on an adventure far from home led by the compulsion of the magnifying glass. Will he be able to make it back home from this far-off adventure?

Calvin’s Great Slide by Colin Moore is a fast-paced and fun-filled book that will have you thoroughly entertained. This book, although short, managed to pack an entire adventure within its few pages. From start to finish we are given just the right amount of information to go into the story and follow Calvin’s adventure into the Swallows. The start of the book is quite sad following the loss of Calvin’s grandfather but steadily heads into the realms of adventure and comedy. Calvin is an inquisitive lead character with an almost quirky personality and that just made this even better to read. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend anyone to pick up this book and give it a go.
