Set in rural Minnesota and New York in the 1970s, Candlewood by Evelyn Ann Casey is an evocative tale that centers on Margaret Joyce (Meg), a resilient young teacher. Following a work-related strike, she is offered a job by her pastor. Her duties include providing pastoral care to the senior members of her parish. Meg embraces the sense of belonging and community that comes with the position. But she also wonders where her life will lead next. Then comes the day when she falls deeply in love with Father Andy, the newly assigned priest at her parish. Unfortunately, his commitment to the church means he won't be able to give Meg the things she values the most in life—marriage and a family. Along the way, she has to fend off unwanted advances from the priest in her prayer group. How will Meg navigate these obstacles in her life?
Candlewood by Evelyn Ann Casey is an intriguing portrayal and exploration of themes of family dysfunction, love, autonomy, societal expectations, and discrimination in a Catholic parish. Meg's journey to happiness certainly makes for a bold, engaging, and thought-provoking read. Her predicament with Andy paints both characters in an authentic and vulnerable position. Their love divides, yet poetically brings them together at the same time. In light of her romantic and moral dilemma, readers will even begin to relate to her struggles concerning her parish's mandates. I love how we, the readers, are constantly kept on edge, wondering what decisions Meg will make and how they will ultimately impact her life. Eddie, Meg's gay brother, and his role in her life—and the narrative—add beautiful depth and nuance to the plot, given its religious motif. If you love literary fiction starring flawed but identifiable characters, Candlewood is the perfect book for you.
