Anthony is on the dock, fishing pole in hand and line in the water. His older brother and sister play cards nearby on the deck of a cabin while his parents put together dinner. Suddenly, there’s a pull on his fishing line. Anthony is worried. In the past, he fished with his grandfather, but his grandfather died less than a year ago. Can he land the fish? In her picture book, Catch of the Day, author Dina M. Hardt tells an everyday story based on her own childhood. She captures a grandparent’s ability to show a grandchild love and to help them grow up through sharing seemingly simple skills. The delicate, precise watercolor and ink illustrations by Ellie Erhart create a visual image of the storyline.
Catch of the Day by Dina M. Hardt is a powerful, well-written book. An experienced elementary school teacher, she clearly understands her audience of young children and their families, and illustrator Ellie Erhart is right on board with her. I especially liked the ethereal reflection of Anthony’s grandfather in the water as his grandsons walked on the dock. To me, an overhead view of swirling water in another illustration hints at a greater power. This picture book leaves the door open for good talks with little ones. Read-aloud sessions can segue into talks about feelings, losses, and accomplishments. The overriding theme of this book is one of love and triumph. Anthony’s grandfather has left him with much more than the ability to land a striped bass.
