Central Outbreak Response: Genesis by R.J. Kennett is a modern zombie tale that fans of the genre would enjoy and appreciate. The chaos started right at the opening. Max Newsome, an ex-soldier, was attending a lecture when he heard gunshots from outside. Thinking it to be a gunmen-in-campus situation, the students and the campus staff quickly went for a lock down just as they practiced. However, Max and a fellow student, Arthur, soon discovered that the shots were coming from a group of cops and students trying to defend themselves from a zombie onslaught.
I appreciated the fast-paced plot, and this novel is definitely a page-turner. The characters behaved realistically, and the first-wave zombie apocalypse storyline was plausible. As an ex-soldier, Max Newsome was inevitably the one to lead the survivors to fight. The only discontentment that I had with this character was the number of times he used the phrase “can it.” I actually preferred Arthur; the sarcastic yet honest geek. Eva, a medical student, was undeniably a fitting addition to the trio.
Personally, I find the action scenes are a little light compared to the other zombie stories that I have read before. On the whole, it was an enjoyable read. Characterization, prose and dialogue do need some improvement in several aspects, but Central Outbreak Response: Genesis is a solid debut from R.J. Kennett. I’m curious to know what happen to Max’s girlfriend, Aimee, who is yet to be found. The story ends with a cliff-hanger that is enough to make readers look forward to its sequel.
