Charlotte by Charlotte Adelman and Mala Blomquist tells a riveting story of love, hope, and sheer willpower in the face of one of the most devastating periods in history—the Holocaust. As a Holocaust first-generation survivor, Charlotte retells her story with the help of Mala, who, upon hearing this brave woman’s story, knew what it would mean for those touched by the tragedy. When your world is turned upside down, there is always at least one relative you can depend on, but what if they are harshly ripped away from you? What if you have now become public enemy number one to once-loving friends and neighbors? Being forced to wear a symbol of her religion to alienate her further from friends was hard enough, but Charlotte would endure much worse if she was going to survive this horrific period in her young life. However, the warm and loving family she once knew and loved would never be the same again.
So many experiences in Charlotte: A Holocaust Story of Strength, Courage, and Hope remind me of my own country, South Africa, and the hardship under the cruel leadership of a hateful dictator, much like Hitler. In that way, Charlotte’s story became personal to me. The isolation and categorizing of certain groups felt familiar, and so did the hopelessness. It was palpable. Needless to say, a child of Charlotte’s age develops trauma, and this manifests, rearing its head later in their adult life. But not so with Charlotte, whose faith and unimaginable strength saw to it that she overcame the most horrific and cruel time in her life. Charlotte Adelman and Mala Blomquist bring this bittersweet memoir, Charlotte, to life, capturing the young girl’s pain and willpower beautifully. This is a wonderful tribute to those who did not make it. It is about survival and endurance, and also love and hope.
