Children of the Watchers by Michael Joseph centers around Rob, a Boston University student fascinated by space and UFOs, whose life becomes intertwined with Emily, a mysterious fellow student claiming extraterrestrial origins. After Rob’s grandmother dies, he discovers his late father’s journal, revealing that both his and Emily’s families were part of a secret group called the Watchers, entities connected to soul cultivation across the universe. Rob, Emily, and their friends Jennifer and Mitch confront men marked with a pyramid-eye tattoo linked to their families’ deaths. Captured and brought before an entity called the Creator, they learn about their cosmic roles as children of the Watchers. The plot follows their struggle to understand their identities, the fates of their families, and the choice to embark on a new life to help stabilize the universe on Emily’s home planet, Cadae Ib.

Children of the Watchers by Michael Joseph is a sharply executed story, and through Rob's first-person point of view, readers can fully grasp the secrecy, distrust, and quiet urgency of characters forced to act before they understand what they’re part of. The writing is simple, straightforward, and efficient, and Joseph successfully uses dialogue to push the plot forward and free it of unnecessary detail. This is a skill set usually reserved for seasoned authors and is a testament to his aptitude as a writer. One of the most effective elements is how quickly the group has to choose when approached by those claiming to know their families’ fates, pulling the cast deeper into a situation that feels controlled by forces just beyond reach. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and a sense that something larger is closing in, and it's clear that a continuation of the series is going to happen. When it does, I'm absolutely on board to continue the ride. Very highly recommended.
