Clipperton by Karl Berger is a haunting historical novel that follows Frank Herrmann’s quest to uncover the secrets of his late father’s past. When Frank discovers documents linking his father to Clipperton Island, he embarks on a perilous journey of self-discovery. Accompanied by his late wife’s sister, Leila—whom he is falling for—Frank and his cousin, Jim, head to the remote island. However, their expedition takes a deadly turn when they are attacked by drug dealers and left stranded as a violent storm hits. Amidst the chaos, Frank uncovers damning evidence: his father was a high-ranking Nazi involved in Auschwitz, who remained loyal to the Nazi cause until his death. Forced to confront the sins of his father and his own complicated feelings, Frank must decide whether to embrace or reject his family’s dark legacy.

Author Karl Berger has a real knack for creating a sense of place and throwing readers into it with full multisensory detail, and his evocative prose captures the haunting beauty and danger of the remote Clipperton Island perfectly. There's total balance in the storytelling that tells you you're in the safe hands of a confident author, as the novel’s blend of personal drama, historical revelations, and suspense makes for a compelling read that still has time to breathe and develop a deeper emotional story. This suits the moral complexity of Frank’s struggle, and as we see him wrestle with his father’s dark past, there's a lot of emotional weight in the dialogue and thought presentation that lets us into his innermost feelings. Overall, Clipperton is a gripping exploration of family secrets, guilt, and the enduring shadows of history that I would certainly recommend to one and all.
