Cotton and the Shadow of Memory Creek is a children’s picture book by Carolyn Christian. It tells the story of some barn animals who get pulled into an unexpected adventure. Cotton, a nosy little cat, slips out of the barn after dark. She takes a walk along Memory Creek and accidentally wakes up something ancient. The rest of the animals notice something’s off, so they go check it out. Church, the old pit bull, takes charge and leads the animals to the creek. As they gather by the water, the creek actually speaks up, warning them about the Shadow—a strange emptiness that lives off memories. The Shadow targets and marks Foxy, a mustang with a lost memory about a companion who once saved her life. The group decides to help Foxy by confronting the Shadow and their own fears.

Cotton and the Shadow of Memory Creek is the first book in the Mama Moss Mountain Tales series. Meet a lively group of animal characters, each with their own quirks. Cotton stirs up mischief wherever she goes; Fancy is dramatic, Bailey is protective, and Church is wise. Together, they make up a group that’s anything but boring, and kids will have fun getting to know each of them. Carolyn Christian tells their story with a touch of folklore and fantasy, mixing in real emotion. She whisks you away to a magical mountainside, complete with a sparkling creek and a wise old cedar that seems to have stories of its own. There’s just enough suspense to keep you guessing, and plenty of humor to make you smile. At its core, the story really shows the importance of memories, identity, teamwork, and courage. The illustrations by Anita Deleon are beautiful, bright, detailed, and perfectly bring the story’s world to life. I had a great time reading this book. If you want a story that celebrates bravery, friendship, and never giving up, this is a great choice to read with your kids.
