Crossing the Blue Line by William Mark is a crime thriller worthy of the name in every aspect. Dylan Akers and Beau Rivers have been more than colleagues, two cops who would do anything to cover each other’s back. When Dylan’s daughter is raped and murdered by two thugs, the two cops kill them, covering up every trace of evidence. But of course, people knew that it was Rivers and Dylan who did the job. But no one could prove it. The two cops, now assigned to different posts, have put the entire thing in the past, but new evidence resurfaces, and they could face murder charges if this evidence falls into the hands of the tenacious IA Commander who investigates the case. At a time when the city is threatened by an overly ambitious drug lord and when murder cases pile up, the Chief of Police must cross “the blue line” and offer a life or death ultimatum to the two cops. Can Dylan and Rivers redeem themselves or be destroyed by a more cunning, unforgiving enemy?
Crossing the Blue Line is the first of William Mark’s books I have read and I am out to get the others. The writing is more than great and the characters are created to win the reader’s sympathy, fully fleshed out, each with a good deal of conflict to deal with that allows readers to see what the human animal can do when under pressure. The pace is fast and I loved the way conflict develops throughout the entire story. From the beginning, one keeps on asking what will happen to the delinquent cops until new evidence resurfaces against them. The offer they receive from their boss could be nothing less than a murder charge. Can they really come out of this alive? This book is a masterpiece, in James Patterson's league.
