Crowman is a work of fiction set in a dark fantasy world and was penned by author David Rae. The plot centres around Utas, father to a sick daughter, and his quest to cure her will force him to face truths about himself, and the world around him, that he might rather not uncover. Vatu, the great spirit, keeps the world in darkness by imprisoning the Sun in a box, and Utas knows that he must challenge this in order to keep his daughter well, for she too glows with a mysterious light. So begins a conceptual and intriguing fantasy novel with plenty of clever secrets to uncover.

This is a dark fantasy work that reads like mythology, which adds to the tense realism of its atmosphere, concept, and characters really well. The lore is deep but simple to grasp initially, and author David Rae draws his readership into the culture around Vatu’s darkness, and the ways of Utas and people like him. Once these fascinating introductions are made, the plot really takes off into deeper intrigue, and the lexical choices used to describe the juxtapositions of darkness and light cover many different metaphors and ideas at once. There is a cinematic and emotive quality to this coloring of the work, making it easily imagined in the reader’s mind, and all the more painful and poetic when things go wrong. Overall, Crowman is a fantastic work with plenty of surprises for the diligent reader and is highly recommended for fans of intelligent and conceptual fantasy fiction.
