Cucina Italiana Comes to Brooklyn by John Agresto is by far the most interesting cookbook I’ve ever read. This isn’t just another Italian cookbook; it’s a memoir of John’s culinary adventures as he learns all there is to know about his national heritage. Before he gets stuck into the recipes, he shares with you something about his family history that sets the scene for what you’re about to learn. Along the way, you’ll learn how to make your own pasta and sauces, how to choose the correct oil, and which cheeses go best with what toppings. Beginning with antipasti, you’ll move through soups to everything pasta-related. Once you’re a gourmet pasta cook, continue through fish, meat, vegetables, and pizza. Finally, learn how to make the best Italian desserts, including cannoli.

How could I possibly review a book like Cucina Italiana Comes to Brooklyn with so many cooking tips without trying one or ten for myself? I admit my Italian cooking has improved rapidly thanks to this memoir/cookbook. Lasagne is my all-time favorite Italian dish, and I almost cried the first time I followed this recipe—it’s the best I’ve ever had. Additionally, I’ve even learned how to grow my own garlic. Another huge takeaway that I got from this book is that I’ll never buy premade pasta sauces again. It’s incredibly easy to make these yourselves, and they do taste significantly better. While not specifically geared toward men, John Agresto’s writing style and clear “say it how it is” approach let men know that they, too, can be successful Italian cooks in no time. As John states in the conclusion, “This book is not meant to be an end but a starting point.” So, read this book, learn how to become an awesome home Italian chef, then branch off into other culinary regions.
