Cuthburt Under the Sea is a delightfully illustrated children’s book. Written by Mamma Macs and illustrated by Emma Matinca, it tells the story of Cuthburt, an adventurous giraffe who decides to spend the day at the beach with his friends. They all go water skiing, where Cuthburt falls from his skis and goes under the water. Cuthburt happens upon a friendly dolphin, who quickly gives scuba gear to Cuthburt so he can breathe while submerged. Seeing how beautiful things are underwater, Cuthburt follows the dolphin into deeper waters, only to stumble upon an underwater circus. The ringmaster – a stingray – is in charge of the underwater spectacular and asks to see what talents Cuthburt can show them. He quickly performs his clowning acts, much to the delight of the clown fish in attendance, and receives much applause. With his oxygen tank running low, Cuthburt returns to the water’s surface and is rescued by his friends in a yellow submarine. That night, Cuthburt’s dreams about his underwater adventure make him smile.
I very much enjoyed the tale of Cuthburt the giraffe, starring in Cuthburt Under the Sea, which shows that life under the water can be just as colorful and spectacular as life above. The friendly dolphin captured a very real part of the Australian lifestyle. Mamma Macs’ and Emma Matinca’s story is a unique and unusual one which is beautifully presented for children in an easy-to-read format. The large illustrations will delight children of all ages, leaving them with smiles as they dream about Cuthburt’s underwater circus adventure. Teaching children the beauty of all animals is important to a child’s development, and the author and illustrator have matched each other’s work perfectly in bringing this story to life.
