Cutler's Wonderful Creations by Aaron Philip Gordon is a children's book about finding your God-given identity. Mr Cutler has his own store, and he wants to make a special gift for his daughter, Alina. He crafts a special knife, fork, and spoon set – after all, that's what he makes best. Alina loves them, especially as she is learning to eat by herself, but she uses Spoon more than Knife or Fork. That left them unhappy, feeling like they had no purpose in life. When Fork gets his chance to shine, it doesn’t work out as expected, but a conversation with Mr. Cutler introduces them to something new. Can Fork and Knife find their purpose in life? Will they ever be as happy as Spoon?
Cutler's Wonderful Creations by Aaron Philip Gordon is a beautifully illustrated book that, on the face of it, is just a cute story about a set of cutlery. But it's way more than that. The message behind this story is that we all have a purpose in life, and it may not be the same as everyone else's. The book promotes asking questions and teaches children that their purpose will become clear and to have faith. One sentence that stood out to me was in the dedication at the start – "May your identities never be shaped by shifting societal norms." Children are under constant pressure to be something they aren't, and it's important that they look past these expectations and be who they were born to be. This is a fun story, and kids will love reading it, but it will also teach them a lot about themselves and, hopefully, shape who they become.
