Dangerous Enemy is a work of fiction in the action, adventure, and thriller subgenres. It is another work in the continuing series by author Clark Selby and is best suited to the general adult reading audience. Although the story can be read as a gripping standalone terrorist thriller, this work follows up with retired CIA agent Tom Parker, who has attempted to live a normal with Jenny after the events of Dangerous Cargo. But with Jack in captivity at the hands of Al-Qaeda, Tom can’t stay retired for long, and he and Jenny embark together on a high-stakes chase to find Jack and uncover another sinister plot along the way.
I never tire of the action-packed works of author Clark Selby, for there’s always something new to discover and appreciate amid the international tension and intrigue. This time, the real joy of the work was in seeing characters grow and deepen as people, and also in their relationship with one another. Tom and Jenny have always been a fiery match, but in this novel, the plot allows Jenny’s powerful influence and networking to come into their own, and with or without Tom, she’s a hero you can follow through thick and thin. I also really enjoyed the development of the motivations of the terrorist insurgents and the exploration of what they’re doing, as it never feels like Selby just throws in cardboard villains: they’re real people with real motivations. Overall, Dangerous Enemy is another superb adventure for fans of the existing series and a fine addition to any thriller reader’s bookshelf.
