Jamila A. Stone’s Darkness Awaits is a fun read for fans of young adult urban fantasy. It also has a strong appeal to the general audience for the fantasy genre. Two characters are at the center of the story: Natalie King and Alexandra Aurelius. They are witches who are returning for their junior year in Virtus Academy and they hope that life will be less eventful than the previous semester. They couldn’t be more wrong because on the first day that Nat returns to school, she is telepathed, and finds herself helping Alex who is being attacked by enemies in an alley. While her mother is in prison, Alex is plagued by innumerable attacks from dark and deadly forces. Thankfully she has always had Nat to protect her. But the darkness that pursues her escalates to an explosive moment of crisis. Will Nat and her friends stand for her, or will she be submerged in it?

This author writes the world of the young characters so beautifully and the dialogues are fun to read. The story features magic and the supernatural. The friendships that are built in the story have an enviable place in keeping the characters sane, as they depend so much on each other to survive. The writing is atmospheric; the author has the gift of conjuring vivid images in the minds of the readers and this ability makes the story fun to read. Darkness Awaits is emotionally charged, and the author develops a conflict that affects the characters on multiple levels — physical, emotional, and psychological. Jamila A. Stone delivers great entertainment in this original novel and offers readers memorable characters to follow.

Darkness Awaits is a work of fiction in the fantasy, magical adventure, and action sub-genres, and was penned by author Jamila A. Stone. Written for adult reading audiences, the work does contain scenes of a sexual nature, the use of explicit language, and scenes of graphic violence throughout. In this thrilling sequel to Strange Things Await, we return to the adventures of Alexandra and Natalie, a pair of witches now facing their high school year with even more magical mayhem waiting than before. As Alex finds a new girlfriend and tries to move on with life, new darkness and a powerful personal hit await. Will Alex be able to rely on those around her, or indeed on her own inner strength this time?

Author Jamila A. Stone has crafted a fantastic sequel that lifts the events of her magical urban fantasy world to another level of suspense, action, and emotional highs and lows. As with the first novel, the character development is deeply committed so that we fully understand the central female roles, and that makes it all the more heartbreaking when the forces out to get them hit so personally and emotively. There is a cautious feel to the novel, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they wait for shadows to emerge. This tension is masterfully scripted into the intriguing dialogue, chapter structure, and highly descriptive atmosphere of the piece. Overall, I would certainly recommend Darkness Awaits for fans of the first novel, and the series in general to fantasy fans seeking bang up to date and action-packed drama.

Darkness Awaits by Jamila A. Stone is a gripping urban fantasy with interesting young characters and a lot of magic. If you love LJ Smith, then this will be a great read for you. Natalie King and Alexandra Aurelius are two young witches who are expecting to have the best of junior year. On her first day back in Virtus Academy and while brushing her teeth, Nat is mysteriously transported to an alley, where Alex is being attacked. Alex is also injured. After saving Alex, their journey becomes is a rocky path to follow. Alex’s mother is in prison, and she is attacked by dark and dangerous enemies. Each day brings new challenges, but Alex can rely on the support of Nat. But as the darkness increases, they quickly understand that standing together can be the only way to beat what is coming for Alex.

This is a beautiful story with memorable characters. It starts with a crisis and magic: Alex is attacked, and Nat unwittingly uses a magic ring with a protection spell on it to appear at the scene to help her. And from this very moment, the reader understands that the two characters share a powerful bond. Nat is like Alex’s protector and I enjoyed the way their relationship is developed. Rachel is another compelling character who helps to deepen the theme of friendship. The characters are not the everyday kind. There is a drug-dealing psycho werecat, witches, and other characters with unique powers. Darkness Awaits by Jamila A. Stone is written in beautiful prose and filled with drama. The plot is twisty and the worldbuilding expertly accomplished.
