Jamila A. Stone’s Darkness Awaits is a fun read for fans of young adult urban fantasy. It also has a strong appeal to the general audience for the fantasy genre. Two characters are at the center of the story: Natalie King and Alexandra Aurelius. They are witches who are returning for their junior year in Virtus Academy and they hope that life will be less eventful than the previous semester. They couldn’t be more wrong because on the first day that Nat returns to school, she is telepathed, and finds herself helping Alex who is being attacked by enemies in an alley. While her mother is in prison, Alex is plagued by innumerable attacks from dark and deadly forces. Thankfully she has always had Nat to protect her. But the darkness that pursues her escalates to an explosive moment of crisis. Will Nat and her friends stand for her, or will she be submerged in it?
This author writes the world of the young characters so beautifully and the dialogues are fun to read. The story features magic and the supernatural. The friendships that are built in the story have an enviable place in keeping the characters sane, as they depend so much on each other to survive. The writing is atmospheric; the author has the gift of conjuring vivid images in the minds of the readers and this ability makes the story fun to read. Darkness Awaits is emotionally charged, and the author develops a conflict that affects the characters on multiple levels — physical, emotional, and psychological. Jamila A. Stone delivers great entertainment in this original novel and offers readers memorable characters to follow.
