Daughters of the Crosslands: Book One by Brian Kerr takes readers on an extraordinary journey across magical lands where fierce human-like creatures hunt for the flesh of the unsuspecting, and a self-made queen takes things to the extreme in a bid to continue her evil legacy. Twins Senya and Raedwin are half-Brohndai, a clan that had been banished by the Empire years ago. After three years of separation following an accident that took the life of Senya’s lover, a strange woman knocks on her door one night, claiming that Raedwin is in grave danger. But, unbeknownst to them, a self-elected ruler of the Crosslands, Crassica the White, needs the twins together for her own ritual to ensure her legacy reigns over the Crosslands for eternity. With her powers waning, a cautious Senya knows it will not be easy finding her brother in the Crosslands and accepts the hunter Brogan’s help, a seemingly good man eager to right past wrongs.
Intoxicating and refreshingly original, Daughters of the Crosslands has a compelling storyline and distinct characters whose voices carry far, the pages springing to life. I was immersed in the plot, hungry to turn the page yet never ready to reach the ending. An immensely talented writer, Brian Kerr transports readers into faraway lands full of extraordinary adventures and surreal creatures. He artfully created different characters with distinct personalities. Despite Brogan’s pain and suffering, he was surprisingly positive, an admirable attribute that made me smile, especially when Senya tried convincing him of the dangers that lay ahead. The twins’ closeness made their isolation from others easier, but Raedwyn’s sudden departure broke a part of her. I was desperate for a reunion and a happy ending, but because the plotline was so unpredictable, I knew it could end in any manner. Senya’s devotion to her brother and selfless bravery were things to behold, as was their special way of communicating. An epic fantasy with a romantic element, Daughters of the Crosslands will have you holding your breath at times, afraid for the characters you’ve come to love. I wait with bated breath for the sequel in this captivating saga.
