It is 2010 in Davis, California, and Scott Anchorage knows how to kill women without leaving a trace. First he scalps them, rips off their fingernails, and then cuts out their tongue and finally cleans up the murder scene. Nice guy! It seems that Scott was one of several orphans fostered and cruelly, barbarically mistreated by Miss Rosaline who knew how to keep those boys in line. Scott scalps another victim but mistakenly drops the book of matches that lists his name, address and phone number. As Scott flees the murder scene of his latest victim, aging Christy Trump, he runs into Robert Benton who picks up the dropped match book. Robert has lost his job and has just faced a diagnosis of terminal colon cancer. Robert has a gun and is ready to commit suicide but Detective Victor Eastwood, while at the crime scene, tells Benton to cancel his death plans. Robert, in between bouts of diarrhea, calls Scott Anchorage's phone number listed on the match book and the "Scalper" calls Robert back. How is Detective Eastwood going to stay on top of events as they begin to happen, one after another? And can he keep Robert Benton from Death Row?
"Dead Rich" is a great beginning for a thriller that readers will love. The plot needs a bit of tweaking as Robert Benton incriminates himself in a not totally believable way. Victor Eastwood, Sandi Mahoney, Captain Ludley, Benton's wayway wife Jesse, and Sandi's murderous husband Steve are among the story's strong characters but Scott Anchorage, or whatever alias he is using for a moment, is a psychopathic dream of a character. He is gorgeous but bad and totally crazy and he is hard to bring down. The governor's role in this story could easily be eliminated, but otherwise, "Dead Rich" is on its way to becoming a first-rate thriller.
