Dead Run by Michael Kent follows Montreal police lieutenant Robert Beaudry as he looks into the murder of Pavela Diankha. She was a strong, athletic woman found dead on a hiking trail on Mount Royal. At first, it seemed like a straightforward case, but things quickly became messy. Beaudry starts learning about Pavela’s private life—her past abusive relationships, conflicts with her family, and a brother who has a criminal record and keeps disappearing using different identities. When they review the forensic evidence again, the cause of death turns out to be different, which changes the investigation completely. Soon, what looked like one murder points to bigger criminal activity hiding in the city. Can Beaudry figure it out before it all slips away?
Dead Run by Michael Kent is a crime and police procedural novel that combines mystery, suspense, and meticulous investigation. I liked how the story spends time on routine police work, showing how cases come together through small but crucial details. The sections involving forensics and surveillance activities keep the plot moving while still making the investigation easy to follow. I was drawn to Beaudry as a lead because he is capable, flawed, and relatable. The balance between police work and his personal life made his choices believable. It really showed that Beaudry’s job doesn’t just stop when he leaves work, following him into his personal time and the difficult conversations he had to pursue. It even shaped how he approached danger and his responsibilities as a lieutenant. By the end, I really appreciated the patience and persistence it takes to follow a tough case all the way through.
