John Reisinger is a former Coast Guard officer and engineer, who writes on historic incidents and themes. He is the author of Master Detective, the true story of detective Ellis Parker and his controversial involvement in the Lindbergh kidnapping investigation. Max Allan Collins called Master Detective "Fascinating reading for true crime buffs and mystery fans alike." John also writes the Max Hurlock Roaring 20s Mysteries, a series of books based on real crimes of that era. Death in Unlikely Places: A Max Hurlock Roaring 20s Mystery by John Reisinger is an old-fashioned murder mystery. It’s 1926 and the real estate boom in Florida is on a downward spiral. Real estate developers keep turning up dead, in ways that just shouldn’t be possible. One is killed in an office locked from the inside; one is killed on a boat in full view of a marina, one dies on an elevator that is in between floors, and another dies in a private gallery, a room with one door that is in constant view. How can this be? The killer has been dubbed The Invisible Man and it’s time for Max Hurlock to step in and find out just who he is. To get to the truth, he must dig his way through the depths of the real estate business, tourists, bootleggers and a Voodoo priestess, but things aren’t quite all they seem.
Death in Unlikely Places by John Reisinger is the fifth Max Hurlock story. I haven’t read any of the others, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this one. The development of Hurlock’s character was such that I knew all I needed to know about him. It felt to me like an Agatha Christie style of story, with a great plot and a fast-moving story that took me in many different directions. This is one of those books that had me acting as an amateur sleuth myself, trying to figure out who could have done it and how. There is plenty going on in the story, but it all ties together neatly at the end in a tightly written plot conclusion. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys sleuthing stories.
