Deception is a crime thriller novella written by Dwayne T. Martin. It was Michael's proudest moment, the culmination of all his hopes, dreams and hard work. He was graduating from police academy at the top of his class. Angel, his friend for so long and now his sweetheart, was there to watch the ceremony and she also sang the national anthem. All of his family and friends were there to celebrate his accomplishment. The post-graduation euphoria came all too quickly to an abrupt end when Michael's car was sideswiped as he left the academy. His car lost control from the impact, and his body was helplessly flung to and fro until there was a jarring impact as the car hit a highway divider. Michael felt his face smash into the steering wheel and then the tearing, burning pain as the airbag belatedly deployed. When he finally struggled back to consciousness, he could hear people whispering that he was lucky to have survived, but when the doctor told him about his spinal cord injury and paralysis, he felt anything but lucky.
Dwayne T. Martin's psychological thriller novella, Deception, is gritty, intense and compelling. Michael's story is one the reader can't help but admire. His dedication and hard work finally paying off and culminating in his graduating at the top of his class and winning the love of the woman he had silently loved for so long. To see all of his dreams dashed in a moment is stark and moving. You can feel his anguish and shame as he feels everyone watching and judging as his powerless body is wheeled out of the hospital. Martin's story is credible and well-plotted, and his characters are very well-defined. I was particularly impressed with his action-packed descriptions of the warehouse fire and the combined heroism of Michael and his mentor, CPT Jenkin. Deception is most highly recommended.
