“Detour” by Jennifer St. Clair is a user-friendly paranormal novel with no “adult” themes or language. It features Karen Montgomery, whose great-grandfather was an elf. She sees ghosts and hangs around with vampires, healers, dryads, and her man-friend, Russ, who is “half” vampire and all wizard. She is also the town librarian. "Detour" is the fourth book in the 'Karen Montgomery series'. In this story Karen takes a detour (thus the title) down a road she’d never before noticed, only to find a washed out bridge, a rusted wreck of a car, a faded old white cross, and a ghost. The thrust of the story is her effort to help the ghost. But what do all those other paranormal creatures have to do with the story? And what kind of “help” does a ghost need, anyway?

I really enjoyed this story. It features a number of usually “scary” characters, but there is absolutely nothing scary about them in this story. It is perfectly suitable for young readers from teens on up, and I have no doubt they will thoroughly enjoy it. As it is the fourth in a series, I worried whether it might not make a lot of sense, but my worry was unnecessary, because the story stands on its own. Unfortunately, I enjoyed it so much that I am now going to have to hunt down the previous volumes so that I can read them, too! Jennifer St. Clair is an author worth following. If her prior and future books are this good, she will be writing for a long time to come.
