Diary of a Narcissist by Chris Cavendish is the story of James Dwyer, a successful surveyor at a thriving company in central London. But for all his charm and good looks, he can’t seem to maintain a healthy relationship with anyone, much less women he’s romantically involved with. He is, however, adamant that he is not the problem, but merely misunderstood. Manipulative and self-serving, the delusional James always finds a way to twist the narrative to his advantage, with total disregard for anyone else’s feelings. Written in a nonlinear timeline, Diary of a Narcissist tells the story of how James, who seemingly has everything, ends up in a psychiatric hospital, caught up in deadly charges.
Dark and disturbing, Diary of a Narcissist shows exactly what it is like to suffer at the hands of a person with a narcissistic personality disorder. I was unable to put this book down, desperate to finish James’ and his victims’ stories. Ultimately, it is James’ own childhood experiences that contributed to his mental anguish. Controlling and emotionally volatile, James is indeed a textbook narcissist, always finding a way to make himself the victim. It was fascinating to see how James could easily manipulate a situation to his advantage. I truly ached for his victims and the abuse they suffered at his hands. Terrifying and magnetic, James is every woman’s nightmare; sweet at the start and deadly at the end. Chris Cavendish masterfully brings character and plot together, creating an enthralling read. If you’ve ever been the victim of a James Dwyer or wondered what it is like being in a relationship with a narcissist, then this book is a must-read.
