Different Lives: 2 Novellas - Doppelganger and Flipside by Jenny Twist comprises two related short stories. In Doppelganger, the heroine Christine attempts suicide by overdosing on medication because her husband Kevin has been unfaithful to her. She wakes to find herself in Spain. This version of herself is a retired fashion model married to a wealthy estate dealer, and Christine is surprised to discover that she loves Ricky. When she wakes up in a hospital, Christine learns she has survived the suicide attempt. The second story takes over from where the first left off. Christine refuses to go home to her cheating husband and begins to fulfill her ambitions in fashion. But will she be able to connect with Ricky again?
Different Lives by Jenny Twist presented a gentle exploration of alternatives. The narrative was crafted using beautifully structured writing and incorporated literary qualities that made it a pleasure to read. Christine was an appealing character and I wanted to see her happy. The speculative mechanism reminded me somewhat of the film Sliding Doors, although the plot was original. I liked how Richard’s point of view was included in the second story and I worried he would end up with the wrong woman. The incident with Tracy created suspense and I longed for the matter to be resolved. Then the return to Christine’s point of view made me even more eager for the two to find each other. I enjoyed every word of the clever novella and was thoroughly delighted by the outcome. This book will be sure to charm fans of chick-lit.
