Dr. Mergenthaler is a valuable asset with some very special talents that helped him to discover and create the inventions which made him the wealthiest entrepreneur in America. When he is kidnapped from Mount Sinai hospital, it is likely to utilize his unique skills to fuel greedy intentions. Pat O’Malley, civil war veteran and detective, must unravel the mystery surrounding the doctor’s disappearance in Jim Musgrave’s Pat O’Malley Historical Mystery Series - Disappearance at Mount Sinai. As the mystery unravels itself due to O’Malley’s great persistence and ability to infiltrate an anti-Semitic organization, an element of mysticism arises. A mysterious half-angel and half-human mythological figure that only exists in Jewish folklore appears. Is the doctor’s special skill proof of the existence of this unique race? How does that relate to his disappearance? What use is he to his kidnappers? All of these questions and more must be answered as Pat O’Malley follows the clues that lead him deeper and deeper into the mysterious disappearance of the good doctor.

The characters are very realistic and the way in which they interact with each other transports the reader into Reconstruction Era greed and prejudice in a very profound way. The tightly woven mystery even has an element of mythological folklore which makes it seem impossible to penetrate the deeply held secrets upon which solving the mystery hinges. Brilliant, realistic and intuitive; Disappearance at Mount Sinai will keep the reader’s mind buzzing and fingers dancing to turn the next page and uncover the next tiny morsel of the mystery until it is all unwound.
