In Discovering a Hidden Thread in My Family Tree: A Personal Genealogical Discovery Involving Lucille Ball, Susan Lorraine Kadera takes you on a journey about the significance of family connections, even remote ones. While clicking through genealogical sites online, she discovers that she shares ancestors who lived in the early seventeenth century with none other than Lucille Ball, the eponymous star of the 1950s TV series I Love Lucy. For Kadera, the discovery calls for a quiet celebration rather than a grand announcement. It didn’t change her, but gave her a sense of wonder and connectedness. As a writer, she certainly shares the communication skills that made Lucille Ball a worldwide favorite.
I was immediately intrigued by the title and wanted to read Discovering a Hidden Thread in My Family Tree because my late father was a big fan of the TV series I Love Lucy. His infectious laughter at her madcap escapades has been part of my life and my own memories. So reading Susan Lorraine Kadera’s account of her connection was a way of adding another detail to those memories. It is comforting to know that the laughter and boldness we associate with Lucille Ball are family traits, as is her ability to communicate. This well-written, brief genealogical memoir will help many readers connect with their own memories of a marvelous actor who kept up her courage and kept her audience in stitches. I am grateful to Kadera for sharing this gem of family history with us, and I’m sure many readers will agree.
